Iditarod Posters

“Pushing through the Night”

Proceeds from the sale of these posters go to nationally recognized charities

supporting cancer, health and children’s issues worldwide.

Currently there are a series of 3 posters created from many years of photographing the Iditarod race in Alaska. Since 2011, individuals, companies, schools, agencies and physicians have donated and displayed these inspirational posters worldwide.

The similarities between the challenges of the Iditarod dogsled race — mushing through 1000 miles of darkness and freezing cold from Anchorage to Nome in Alaska — have been associated with the same challenges cancer patients and anyone else having traumatic, life-threatening illnesses are going through.

Everyone needs a team on their side, and inspiration in whatever form possible to follow-through, keep their spirits up, and know that there are people and forces out there to empower them. I hope these images and posters can help in some small way.

We are also actively searching and open to corporate and NGO collaboration in helping to support and distribute bulk shipments of posters to hospitals, businesses or any other venues that may be able to display them in relevant and visible places.

Thank you for your support — R.L.

The backstory:

In 2004, my mother (a non-smoker) died of lung cancer just shy of her 70th birthday.  She was as inspirational a woman as she was fun and funny to be with. Oddly, this gave birth to the idea of the first poster in 2011 — to help support friends and families struggling with similar issues, and perhaps needing a reminder that there is always hope in the darkest, coldest nights.

“Guiding Light” is an 18 x 24″ poster featuring the hands of 37 Iditarod mushers surrounding the Aurora Borealis as it illuminates the sky and dogteam of Stephen Schnuelle (2nd place finisher in that race) along the Kuskowim River at minus 30 degrees.  The hands, some mangled or missing fingers, include those of the “Father of the Iditarod”, Joe Redington.

8 Famous Iditarod Hands was the first poster created in the series. It is an 11 x 17″ heavy card stock poster featuring the weathered hands of 8 famous mushers — Lance Mackey, Dee Dee Jonrowe, Rick Swenson, Martin Buser, Jim Lanier, Hans Gott, Jeff King and Mitch Seavey.   They have all run the race for many years, winning and placing in the top ten most of the time. Notice the missing , frostbitten and/or gnarled fingers!

“Take Along Paws to Reach Your Goals” is an 18 x 24″ poster emphasizing how teamwork and determination are needed to overcome life’s hardest challenges, whether you’re on the tundra in the black of night or sitting in a hospital bed. Featuring musher John Barron as his team trots the last 2 miles to Nome along the Bering Sea at sunset.

Anyone facing tremendous hurdles, physical or emotional, is going through their own Iditarod. They need a friend and a team on their side, and a lot of motivation. If you know someone going through a cancer battle — or any life-challenge — brighten their day with this poster, and help support cancer and children’s charities along the way.

Posters make great birthday gifts or Xmas gifts!
